Ant - Bless this house

Postby antains on Mon Jun 12, 2006 1:20 pm

Since I logged on a 5pm Sunday and got the inserts, I consider that as my start time.
Since it's now 12pm on Monday, I consider myself royally cornered.
I've done one drawing. And I've written a poem.
I will, if I can get my hosting organised, get, at least, the first drawing up.
Who would have thought Sunday's Yum Cha lunch would become an all day party back at my place?! It seemed inappropriate to be hiding away and drawing comics with guests over.
I shouldn't be here.

Ant - Bless this house - Melbourne

Okay. I have drawn something. When I started, I was thinking funny.
When I resumed today, my mind said grim.
I have to say, as I impatiently wait for my dial-up to upload, so I can cross-load and you can download, that this was a good experience for me. I'm not that good at drawing, but I liked the challenge of generating a story from a couple of components and trying to represent it visually.
So, to the organisers, thank you for providing this forum.
Before I upload everything, thanks to Trev (rumpusroomie) for hosting my images, thanks to NickB for guiding me through Terminal to upload the images and thanks always to Rita for guiding me and telling me to stop having a tanty when I was getting childish.

Cheers,
Ant.

Ok. Enough words. Well, nearly. I couldn't get the free scanner I was given working, so I used a digital camera to get the sketches on the computy, hence the oddness about them.

Anyway, here goes:

Well, I'm creeped out!

The camera thing worked really well, I think. Was the weird lighting thing around some of the writing (I'm thinking of page 2) a happy accident, or did you do that? Cause it looks pretty darn cool.

Glad you got it done, Ant!

Cheers, Nick.
The lighting around the text was Rita's idea, because the photos looked soft and muddy, so we did some photoshop work to make the text stand out and just give a bit more separation to the other elements.

Finally got a network connection worth something mate! Great work. Were you using pencils or crayons? Cause if you were using crayons then please colour me muchos jealous.

Nick is right about the fact that photographing them actually adds an ethereal quality.

Meanwhile what did your girlfriend have to say about your happy little story? Was she afraid to sleep?

Thank you.
Rita wasn't worried about sleeping. She just says that as long as I don't wake her when I go on a murderous rampage...
And crayons? I don't think I have any around the house. It did feel very primary-schoolish using coloured pencils, though.

That picturebook quality is a nice touch, but also makes me wonder if it's a actual sequential. Meh. Details. Another sad ending amongst all the funny stuff.

I wondered about the "sequentiality" myself. I think I like that it's undetermined. Really, it's only the first panel that's open in that regard.

It has a bit of the "Blair Witch" about it with the choppy framing and so on.

I only saw "Blair Witch" once way back when it was in the cinema, so I can't really remember that much of the editing.
I know I haven't used an original method by using the cut-aways, such as of the dog, but it's one of those styles that has been around long enough that it's hard for me to pin-point a specific influence, comic or cinematic.
