Josh Salmon, Circus House, Melbourne [finished]

Postby thistler on Sun Jun 11, 2006 4:15 pm

hey,

I'm starting now, looking forward to this.

-thistler

edit: I just realised, I don't have a quill, I don't have any small brushes and I've never watched "House". So, I'm going to set it in a circus and base it on what I've seen in the commercials. I'm also switching from calligraphy brushes to something else, I'll try to do more than 8 pages.

here's page 1:

Great comic!
I particularly like the colouring, and the way you could build characters through so few frames. I think you've really managed to capture something in this short piece, a brooding or sinister undertone to a light-hearted, well lit piece.

I look forward to seeing more of your work, where might I find some?

Anything with Circus freaks is a given for me. Cool! And I love House too, so... double bonus! The caricature of Hugh Laurie is sweet, and the most recent episode did have an abundance of the phrase 'perky breasts' so the 'boobie' obsession just makes it seem like an extenson of the show.

Hahaha! Having not watched House but being forced to see the ads week after week, this is very much the picture I get of him too.
Anyway, awesome art. Like some kind of macabre children's book. Very, very cool style. And the gothic overtones worked for me :D

:) I WAS going to have some line where he might say "I'm sick of being treated like an object", but that wouldve been in the 16 page version.

thanks monkee. something kept crashing photoshop while I was colouring this, so it was a little frustrating but I think it turned out ok, kinda like it's in watercolours. there's a few more comics on my site http://www.thistler.net and my comic on here from last year http://forums.pulpfaction.net/viewtopic.php?t=712 :) there's also some paintings and stuff on my website.

I was hoping I got his character slightly right. I saw an ad for his show where I think he said "boobies" or maybe it was "yummy" when a mother was breastfeeding. or something like that :) I figured he was always like that. I'm glad you liked the caricature, the fist attempt looked like Ted Danson and I was getting worried , I DID forget his stubble on the first page though.

thanks :) After the first couple of pages I realised I was finally doing something like a MAD magazine. I used to love MAD, but my mum threw them all out when I was like 8. I was almost going to do it in the style of those MAD movie send-ups, but I dont know what anyone else looks like from the show, so the circus it is!

I have no idea what House is, but I quite enjoyed that. The character expressions are great.

Also not knowing what "house" is, (don't pick up TV at my place).
Liked the macabre elements though.
Nice style.

I happen to be quite fond of House without actually watching it really, so this was perfect! Just enough of a satire without having anything to really do with it. good show! Also, it looks really cool, with the sketchy, wateryness.
