Here's the deal: post links/pictures/info/anything about your favourite artists. Photographers or painters or sculptors or whatever. Just do it!

Also, make sure there are visuals available (like the artists personal page or whatever) so we can all bask in art-glory.

Rule: No cliche posts about Da Vinci or Dali. Dig a bit deeper. We've all met Mona.

The only man I'll ever love: Jean-Michel Basquiat.

The internet runs low on good Basquiat paintings, I'll find some better examples another day.


The only Warhol work I've ever really enjoyed is the stuff he did with Basquiat. This is a pretty famous poster from their first collaborative show.

I posted this at Ozcomics a while ago... but since it's gone and it took me such a bloody long time to track the image/artist down (with a lot of help from forum members) if no body objects I'll re-post..

I missed that post. I have a book (a Thierry Mugler book featuring photography by Newton and others) that this may have come from. Because of my love of both sci-fi and the art deco period(s) of the 20s-40s (also why I loved Kaluta's 'Starstruck'), I've hung onto this book through several moves. It provides me with inspiration from time to time.

At any rate, I have a love/hate thing for Newton. He runs the gamut for me from profane to genius. (which reminds me of this site I saw dedicated to him - it had a blurb talking about the range of subject matter that newton shot... but every example they chose to show involved boobs... some people.......) But there's no doubt he's affected me and my eye. And one day I will most certainly pay homage to him cuz I'm so totally enamored of this image and will find a way to swipe that 'look':

Hello Maggie,
I agree, some of Newton???s work is soft porn for skivvy wearers and can be exploitative (my opinion) but this image struck a chord with me abut 8 years and as a result I had written a character that pays homage to it but when trying to explain it to potential illustrators I found they had no idea what I was talking about (most still don???t).

Never heard of Tadahiro Uesugi before, but I'll definitely keep an eye out for his/ her stuff from now on.

I have a soft spot for Shaun Tan, author of "The Lost Thing" and "The Red Tree".

The man has a skill with oils and narrative that I can only dream of.

No deeper meaning to most of her stuff. She's a character designer for Nickelodeon which means big, brassy, bold cartoon art which instantly tells you everything you need to know about what it's representing.
That thick lineart kicks arse too...
