Judge Dredd

Hey everyone!

It's been a while since I posted. Mr. Franks encouraged me to put some new work up at the Melbourne Creator Meet last Saturday. So here is a piece I did yesterday. Sorry for the image quality, it's taken with my phone. I'll do a proper scan when I'm back at work tomorrow. I'm really looking forward to colouring this one.

Pencil, acrylic paint and white pencil on grey paper.
Thanks for looking.

Very solid piece! The media really suit the genre/character/style.

The only things I would say is it needs more contrast, though I'm guessing that was due to the photo quality.

Thanks Oeleaus. You are completely right about the contrast. I've deliberately left the tones in the mid range mostly due to laziness and not wanting to ink the image. I'll be boosting the contrast in Photoshop over the next few stages.

Here is a better scan:

And the first stage of colour(flats):

More steps to come. Thanks for looking!

That's lovely, Adam. In a grizzled and manly one-man-law-enforcement-army kind of way, I mean. Excellent stuff.

Course, when I asked you to post I really wanted to see that sequential test page you were talking about...

Nice to see you at the meet! Must drink again soon.

Cheers,

Thanks Jason! You know, when I took another look at the page test, after not seeing it for a little while I decided it wasn't very good. So I thought I'd experiment with something else and see how it went. Hence the Judge Dredd image. Fingers crossed with this one.

As a writer I feel it is my duty to point out that I can't draw like this and only wish that I could.

Thanks BMB and Paul! Appreciated.

I haven't had much of a chance to work on this image for a few days but I thought I'd just post my progress anyway for shits and giggles. Cheers.

I'm not a big fan of completely exagerated proportions, but this looks rather awesome, and damn those colours won me over completely.

Hey guys!

It's been a while but I finally finished my Judge Dredd piccie. Work has been pretty busy for me over the last 8 months or so but I'm finding time again now to some art again and absolutely loving it.

I've also completed the pencils on my Ghost Rider 2099 illustration and I'll be posting the updates of this piece here...

Thanks for looking.

Wow awsome artwork. I love seeing how you built the colour up over each stage.

So you scanned the drawing in only as pencil? You didnt ink it. Then you boost the contrast to get your shadows and blacks. Then lay colours over the top? How are you doing your colours if you dont mind me asking?

Hey Lukas. Thank you so much for the kind post. I really do appreciate it.

Yes that's right, I scanned my pencil work which was done on mid-tone grey paper stock with 3B pencil, white pencil, white gouache and black acrylic paint touch-ups and spattering.

While I have a massive love for traditional comic inking, I personally think that my comic style is better off not inked. As you've seen, I have a pretty loose style and inking never really works out too well over my line work.

I can't explain simply what I've done in the final product because firstly, there are far too many layers in my Photoshop scene to quantify what I have done but secondly, I've been searching for my "style" for over a decade, which, I'm only just discovering now and I'm really excited to see where my art style goes next.

The most basic way I will define it though is that I use my scanned work as a guide and I supply hue, value, and saturation, over and under that guiding layer. This is a bit vague I know but one thing that I find that works in any type of artwork whether it be film, comics, or games is layering subtlety over subtlety.

Hey Briggsy,

Greetings from San Diego!

Looking really sharp on the old Dreddster (and Ghost Rider 2099, too)! We should catch up when I get back home.

Cheers,
