...and the rest (including the word "carrying").

[Page 16]

Unfortunately, it suffered from "the plot got lost half way through it" syndrome, so I salvaged what I could and finished it rather quickly as a result. It happens sometimes, and there's always next year...

Oh, and you may note that he never actually did remember her name during the fall... so he never did manage to escape, hence the ending.

Awesome sauce. Good seeing comic work from you still.
It leaves a lot of questions still unanswered, which I enjoyed as it allowed me to try to guess/interpret myself; but it wraps it up rather neatly as well.

Probably the best opening sequence to any of this year's comics I've read yet!

And re-using those pages later on was pretty clever - it's something that gets done in film and comics outside of the challenge, so it's not even really cheating!

Not so sure how I feel about the ending, but reading your "director's commentary" in this thread cleared it up a bit for me at least.

Oh, and I liked the finger tree!

The original idea was that he was in a coma in the real world, and that he doesn't know it and is lost in some sort of netherworld. Someone he loves is trying to call him back, to make him wake up, but he can't remember her name, and until he does, he won't be able to return. Originally I was going to have him remember her name as he fell and then wake up in the hospital room, but I decided at the last minute that he wouldn't remember, and I think he's stuck there for good now, never to wake up.

"Inception" was mentioned earlier, and I hadn't realised the similarities until that point (but you'll have that problem with any story involving a dream from now on), but it was too late to change my story from there. I was more worried about avoiding a "Life on Mars" situation. It's a problem you face when making a 24 hour comic. As the planning is done so quickly, you may not realise problems until it's too late. These stuff-ups happen, and that's half the fun of it. Anyway, there's always next year. :)

Well the opening is very much like The Hudsucker Proxy, but the references just made me enjoy it more (I watch too many films).

Man that background shot on Page 5 is truly whack (in a good surrealist sorta way)!
Great work this year, it wrapped up very cleanly which is the best anyone doing the challenge can hope for :)

Great work.

I did think of 'Life on Mars' when I read your first pages, but I don't think that's a bad thing. As you say, it's a 24 hour comic, so I reckon you just gotta take whatever ideas you get and run.

I agree, the re-used pages work to great effect and I wasn't too confused by the ending (a bit of commentary helped though).

I didn't really see any Inception connection, and I can understand how you would want to avoid comparison with Life on Mars but reading TV Tropes makes it pretty damn obvious that everything has been done somewhere else about a million times, so there' s not much point on worrying about it. Now when people say, "hey, it's just like [blah]" I just link them to the TV Tropes page. With my MIND.

BUT about your comic -- It was great! I liked the whole "WTF am I doing here?" the nebulous city, the posters, the guardians and then it was all a dream! And then it maybe it wasn't! Poor guy. If he remembers her name eventually then I hope he gets free. Otherwise that would suck.
