Comikaze 2010 - That's a wrap!

Postby Troy Kealley on Mon Jun 14, 2010 11:11 pm

Well if you're still working it's time to put down your pencils and get some sleep!

We've had a great turnout this year despite our last minute planning and from what I've seen so far top notch quality too! So take some time to read thorugh your fellow challengers entries and enjoy the results of much hard work.

What happens next?
I'll compile all the entries into easy to navigate lists and categories. That'll take about a week or so. then we'll open up public voting. In the meantime I'll get our crack team of judges assembled who will be assessing the one overall winner from all the 24 page entries. I'll keep you up to date with regular posts here and on Facebook.

What do I get?
Apart from a warm fuzzy feeling that for once you got off your but and finished a comic? :P I'm still compiling the prize list at teh moment but there's a table at Supanova, vouchers from Manga Arts, bundles of quality Australian comics and more to be announced.

What do I do now?
Keep drawing. Maintain the enthusiasm you just found and draw some more great comics!

Stay tuned!

Troy, thanks so much to you and your compatriots for organizing such an awesome event! It's a lot of work to keep something like this going, and I am sure I speak for everyone in saying your efforts are very appreciated!

Even though I piked out, I still had a lot of fun just running one of the group locations for the challenge. We even had enough room to easily support another 6 people, so I'm hoping we get a better turn out for 2011 in that respect.
Seriously, for the people that struggled with motivation or ideas or just needed a little pick me up from time to time, consider doing it as part of a larger gathering next year. It makes it much more entertaining and keeps you motivated.

Troy: There are some simply amazing entries this year.
Perhaps ask people that are category winners and/or runners up if they'd be willing to give non-exclusive print rights for their challenges, and slap them up on Ka-Blam or LuLu.
It'd help generate some much needed funding for next year's event's advertising and prize pool, and be another title people can put to their folio.

Thanks guys - actually had quite a bit of fun myself; so that always makes it easier.

Avi: yep, I'll garner up some interest as soon as we get into the voting etc. I have last year's book very close to ready; and will actually be previewing it at Supanova in Perth in 2 weeks time. (The Lulu print is great but I've muffed some of the layouts.) And nice work on running the group event again; sounds like there was a lot of fun had there.

Jacen: Yes it seems though that as my artwork improves; my stories get stupider. To think I started by writing serious comics... ah well, crime comics are depressing; as banal as my new ones are - they're more fun to draw! (especially the nudie bits)

Cheers again!

Hey all if everyone can bear with me for 2 weeks to get the entries all sorted - I do have to get all my Supanova stuff ready - I'm looking down the list and time REALLY IS running out! As soon as I bowl that over we'll get the voting and judging started I promise. In the meantime make sure you have a read of ALL the comics submitted - some may not grab you for the first page or two but turn out to be well worth the read in the end.

OK I've now got most of my sleep back and caught up with all the end of financial year madness that has drowned me at work, plus got my folow up work from Supanova almost sorted... so now the process of closing up the contest begins. If any of the forum regulars - who did not compete - is interested in helping out with the judging process please drop me a line.
I'm in the process now of compiling the entries and by next week should have the penultimate voting list up and running.

Update

Having spent days going through all the entries I have now compiled the definative list - next year it will be MANDATORY to include PAGE COUNT and FINISHED in the header o_O!
Voting will start tomorrow, I will post up a new anouncement with all the details (and broadcast it on the facebooks) plus details of the categories and prizes.
