I have always been scared of the concept of Second Life. I don't know that this comic does anything to dampen my fears any, but it was a great idea and very entertaining! I can imagine it must have been hell to put together.

I liked the bunny slippers. And was Laurel wearing roller skates? Neat. :p

Well the funny thing is that I didn't think I'd do a comic like this. A few of months ago I had a bright idea of using Second Life to do a comic, but that was going to be a new chapter of Thud and Blunder. That didn't happen, though I did do another SL type comic instead.

Thing was, almost all the panels in that comic were taken from existing screenshots that I already had. I didn't think about doing one for this until on the day. Earlier I had to go shopping and had vague ideas about a drawn character coming to life, but it was going to be mostly drawn. The moment I started though, it didn't go that way. To make it work, I had to logon as each avatar in succession, take snapshots and then edit/overlay them to match. The hardest thing about that was getting the light and perspective right. The panel below (shown full size) used three different snapshots.:

To line them up I used the frames of the window and house in the background as sight markers. The only page where I didn't do that was this one...

...because my boarder logged on as Elsie and I was able to pose them together. But I didn't have anything planned after that scene, and when it would have been handy to do the same again (when everyone's at ABC Island) he was asleep!

Everything else was derived from single shots stitched together. Not sure if I'd do something like this again for a 24 hour challenge. It looks easy, but it is very time consuming - I really was working on this almost for 23 hours straight, with maybe two breaks. My back was sore for two days afterwards.

A follow-up

I've started a follow-up to this comic using the same characters. You'll find the first page over at Stuff Happens....
