ASA Comics/Graphic Novels Portfolio Meeting at Supanova

Supanova has kindly sponsored a meeting of the newly created Australian Society of Authors Comics/Graphic Novels Portfolio this coming weekend and we are inviting comics creators to attend.

What is the Australian Society of Authors?

The Australian Society of Authors (ASA) [www.asauthors.org] which incorporates the Society of Book Illustrators (SOBI) is the professional association for Australia's literary creators. The ASA was formed in 1963 to promote and protect the rights of Australia's writers and illustrators, and now has over 3000 members across Australia. The ASA was instrumental in setting up the Copyright Agency Limited and the Australian Copyright Council, and successfully campaigned for Public Lending Right in 1975 and Educational Lending Right in 2000. The ASA sets minimum rates for pay and conditions for authors and illustrators, and publishes books, papers and lists for emerging and established writers. Members receive the ASA journal, Australian Author, and regular newsletters throughout the year. The ASA also provides a contract advisory service for members, run mentorships for new and emerging writers and offers advice about writing, copyright and publishing. Membership fees are tax-deductible expenses for professional writers and artists.

Who should attend this comics industry meeting?

Established and beginning writers, artists, pencillers, inkers, colourists and letterers working in the comics medium and its various formats (comics periodicals, graphic novels, zines, webcomics etc).

Why is it important to attend?

This is an opportunity to set the agenda for a new advocacy group looking after the professional interests and the rights of comics creators, and to find out the benefits of joining the ASA.

Who are the presenters?

The dual portfolio holders are Jozef Szekeres (representing artists) and Julie Ditrich (representing writers).

When is it being held?

Date: Saturday 13 October 2007
Time: 6.00-6.45pm
Venue: Supanova, Adult Swim Seminars Room, The Dome, Sydney Olympic Park (ground floor near entrance—see program map for location)
Special Instructions; Please note that the Expo shuts at 6.00pm and special arrangements have been made to accommodate this meeting. Creators wishing to attend are requested to go directly to the Adult Swim Seminars Room and then to leave the venue promptly after the meeting has finished. No exhibitors will be allowed back into the Hall after 6.00pm.

Hope you can make it!

Hope to see you all there!
Best,
Jozef Szekeres

Hi everyone – Julie here – the other ASA Comics/Graphic Novels Portfolio holder,
Just want to give everyone a quick update on the meeting we had at Supanova.

Jozef and I walked through Artists' Alley and talked to creators from all over Australia – most of whom came to the meeting afterwards. In all, we had about 40 people attend and we were gratified to know they were very receptive to the idea of this ASA initiative.

One of the things I must bring up in order to eliminate any possible confusion about jargon is about our use of the word "portfolio". In regular comics usage this word means an artist's or writer's individual collection of creative work that they bring to conventions or show publishers for the purposes of gaining employment.

In context of the ASA, we use the word "portfolio" to mean a special interest group. For example, the ASA also has the Indigenous Writers Portfolio, the Children's Writers Portfolio, the Free Speech Portfolio etc.

The other development is that out of the discussion on Saturday evening we are going to add another issue to our TO DO LIST and that is to examine the comics distribution model used in Australia. Thanks to Ian Gould for raising that topic.

We'll keep you informed on any important proposals as they occur.

Quick report.

Supanova Melbourne went brilliantly. Thank you to all the creators who showed up for the portfolio meeting and for your interest and questions. Many of you absolutely got it! Somebody also signed up for membership on the spot so that was brilliant. Also a big thanks to Tim and Daniel of Supanova for organising the session from their end.

Jozef will be up at Supanova Brisbane on Saturday to talk to Qld creators.

ASA Comics/Graphic Novels Portfolio Seminars 2008

Here is the information on both of the sessions sponsored by the Australian Society of Authors and Supanova. You can also download the official flyers from the ASA website (http://www.asauthors.org/scripts/cgiip. ... geId=10137).

HOW TO WRITE A GRAPHIC NOVEL PROPOSAL FOR THE MAINSTREAM BOOK MARKET

Publishing consultant and literary agent Brian Cook will talk openly and frankly about publishers' expectations in regard to submissions from comics creators hoping to break into the commercial book world. That world is not purely and simply about the artistic work – there are other considerations such as the economics of publishing, synergy with a publisher's "list", and the potential publisher/creator relationship that need to be kept in mind. ASA Comics/Graphic Novels Portfolio holder Julie Ditrich will follow up by discussing what information goes into the various components of a graphic novel proposal such as the covering letter, sample material and the preliminary marketing plan.

About the Speakers
Brian Cook has worked in publishing since 1970 and has wide experience in general trade publishing for both adult and children’s books. Formerly Children’s Publisher for a multi-national publishing company, he is a now publishing consultant, manuscript assessor, mentor and literary agent, and brings his vast range of publishing and sales and marketing experience to this session.

Julie Ditrich is the ASA Comics/Graphic Novels Portfolio holder (representing writers), director of Black Mermaid Productions (http://www.blackmermaid.com) and is a published comics writer/editor. Julie has also worked in the mainstream publishing as a bookseller, publicist, marketing manager, author, editor and publishing consultant.

Seminar Information
Date: Saturday 21 June 2008
Time: 6.00pm to 7.00pm
Venue: The Supanova Seminar Room, The Dome, Sydney Olympic Park (ground floor near entrance—see program map for location)
Entry fee: There is no charge to attend the seminar. However, attendees must be exhibitors or hold a Saturday Day Pass ($20.00) or a Supafan Weekend Pass ($40). Tickets can be purchased at the door or through Ticketek (132 849 or http://premier.ticketek.com.au).
Special Instructions: Please note that the Expo opens at 10.00am and shuts at 6.00pm and special arrangements have been made to accommodate this seminar. THE TIME IS NOW! MARKETING YOUR COMICS TO BOOK PUBLISHERS
This panel session will examine three differing entry points into publishing comics in the mainstream book market. Artist/writer Jessica McLeod (Ghost Farm, Activities for Rainy Days) will discuss how publishing webcomics landed her an international book deal. Comics writer Tad Pietrzykowski (The Dark Nebula) will discuss how self-publishing comic books led to landing a US literary agent and an overseas distribution deal. Wolfgang Bylsma publisher/editor of Gestalt Publishing will speak about how to alienate success in the graphic novel market and will explain some inherently simple protocols that any aspiring graphic novelist can follow to avoid antagonising publishers they approach. Wolfgang will also present a few tips pointed to keeping relationships sweet and bridges unburned, even in the face of rejection slips and/or unwelcome criticism. The session will be chaired by Grant Stone, librarian and comics enthusiast.

About the Speakers
Wolfgang Bylsma is the managing director of Gestalt Publishing (http://www.gestaltcomics.com), Australia's only specialist graphic novel publishing house. He has been making comics since 1991 and co-founded Gestalt in 2005.

Jessica McLeod has been posting comics on the web since 2005. Through her website (http://www.webcomicsnation.com/jessica) she was offered a publishing deal with German-language publishers Luxbooks. She has also just been added to the lineup of Top Shelf's webcomics site: Top Shelf 2.0.

Tad Pietrzykowski has been writing and producing comics over the past 25 years. He was one of the core members of the 'Cyclone' team in the 80's and his primary creations are The Dark Nebula and The Golden Age Southern Cross (http://www.thedarknebula.com). He recently released a series of graphic novels through print-on-demand outlet Ka-Blam.com and has just signed with a US literary agent. Big things appear to be just around the corner – film at 11!

Grant Stone (Chair) has been reviewing comic books and interviewing creators, artists and collectors for 35 years as presenter of the Faster Than Light Radio Show, aired nationally on the Community Radio Network but heard first on RTR-fm Perth. Grant has been for the same period of time instrumental in building the Comic Collection at Murdoch University Library where he is a Senior Librarian. Grant co-edited Comics in Australia and New Zealand: The Collections, the Collectors, the Creators (New York, Hawthorn Press, 1994).

Seminar Information
Date: Saturday 28 June 2008
Time: 6.00pm to 7.00pm
Venue: The Supanova Seminar Room, Robinson Pavillion, Claremont Showground, Perth (see program map for location)
Will Eisner Documentary Screening

The indomitable Tim McEwen from Supanova and Aussie artist extraordinaire Gary Chaloner have just organised a special screening of a new documentary entitled 'Will Eisner: Portrait of a Sequential Artist' which will be held at 7.00pm on Saturday 21 June 2008 (Supanova Sydney) and on Saturday 28 June 2008 (Supanova Perth) after the ASA Portfolio seminars. Sounds like a good chance to see what the great Eisner was about and to privately pay tribute to him as well. The film has apparently wowed the critics and done well on the independent film festival circuit in North and South America. To see a trailer go to the Montilla Pictures website (http://www.montillapictures.com).

Jozef and I will certainly be hanging back to watch the flik.

LEGAL SELF-DEFENCE FOR COMICS CREATORS
Understanding Comics Contracts

It’s natural to be overjoyed when you’re offered a publishing contract for your comics project. It’s also natural to be devastated when you realise the contract you’ve signed has left you with little or no claim over the creative property you’ve laboured on for years.

Knowledge is your first line of self-defence against those publishers who weigh contracts heavily in their favour and attempt to deny you basic and intrinsic creator rights. This seminar works towards preventing you from becoming a victim of exploitative deals by introducing you to legal publishing terms and helping you understand the implications of the major clauses in contracts. These include: intellectual property and copyright; licence and territory; advances and royalties, and subsidiary (ancilliary) rights. This session will also provide you with negotiating tactics and strategies, and information on where to go for help if a dispute arises. Remember… the responsibility on getting a fair deal starts with you!

About the Speaker – Dr Jeremy Fisher
Executive Director of the ASA since 2004, Jeremy Fisher has extensive experience in the Australian publishing industry. He worked as an editor and publishing manager for nearly 30 years before moving into rights management and advocacy roles. First published in 1974, he has written many works in a wide range of genres.

Seminar Information
Date: Saturday 4 April 2009

These seminar topics look exceptionally useful Julie, were any audio recordings made by yourself or affiliated groups? I wouldn't mind downloading this or watching the presentations on youtube if that's possible.
