Great meeting you too, Ed and Jessica. Still got a warm feeling about it and just wrote it up in a report for the February ASA Newsletter which goes out to over 3000 members.

Do I call you Grug (as the others were doing)?

I've heard the reports from Julie about the Perth Trip, and it sounds it was energized and well worth the trip for the contacts it forged. I hope to meet the Perth comic creators some day.
Best,

Hi guys!

Got some Portfolio updates for you all.

Website Page – the ASA now has a dedicated website page for portfolio activities. You can read the latest monthly news reports which are also published in the ASA Newsletter. Here is the link:

http://www.asauthors.org/scripts/cgiip. ... geID=10088

Marketing Know-How – the comics creators who attended the Perth meeting identified the need for educational seminars and resources on marketing. I thought we could start by providing you with useful networking groups, websites and e-newsletters that can help you improve your business practices.

Last Thursday Club – This is a monthly networking event for creative businesspeople – entrepreneurs, innovators, business leaders, idea-makers and thought-leaders. I have attended on a semi-regular basis over the last three years and have learnt a lot and made some excellent connections. It offers exceptional speakers, food, drink, networking activities, prize draws and great fun! It is a Sydney based organisation but the latest news is that the LTC will be opening in Brisbane and Melbourne later on in the year. Check out the following website for details:
http://www.lastthursdayclub.net/

Flying Solo – Identifies itself as Australia’s online community for solo business owners. The website – as well as the weekly e-newsletter – posts excellent articles under subject categories such as Starting Out, Working Smarter, Marketing, Networking, Solo Psyche, Technology, and Staying Balanced. This is highly recommended – get onto the mailing list. Here is the website:
http://www.flyingsolo.com.au/

ParaPublishing – This is a US website which focuses on self-publishing. It offers valuable information on Writing Books, Producing Books, Running Your Own Publishing Business, and Book Marketing, Promoting and Distribution. The e-newsletter has great tips and snippets on US and worldwide publishing trends. Here is the website:
http://parapub.com

Hope this helps!

Hi Comics Creators,
Lots of updates today. In the first instance, I thought you might be interested in the visual Arts grants on offer from the Australia Council>

Visual Arts Board - Skills and Arts Development Grants

• The Visual Arts Board is looking to attract interesting, high calibre applications to the 2008 Skills and Arts Development grant round, and encourages media artists to apply. Applications close 1 August 2008, for projects starting on or after 1 January 2009.

• Within the Skills and Arts Development category artists may apply to either the General Professional Development subcategory, or to one of the Overseas Studios. The criteria by which applications are assessed are: a high degree of artistic merit in the applicant's work to date; and the potential of the project to contribute to the artist's professional development.

• General Professional Development grants are for projects that focus on professional development opportunities for the applicant, eg self-organised residencies, research projects, mentorships, writing projects, participation in workshops and conferences, and curatorial projects. There is no set monetary amount artists may apply for; the Board will consider any reasonable request, though might choose not to fund successful applicants to the extent they request.

• Overseas Studios: three-month residencies ($10,000) are offered in Barcelona, London, Milan, Rome, Paris, Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo; six-month residencies ($20,000) are offered in New York; and a twelve-month ($35,000) residency is offered in Berlin. These residencies are for set time periods, determined well in advance, and based on the ranking of successful applications.

• Please note: artists may only apply once to the Visual Arts Board in 2008; to either New Work, Fellowships, or Skills and Arts Development.

• Skills and Arts Development applications will be available online, or by contacting the Visual Arts Board, in June 2008.

Further enquiries may be directed to Romany Petersen on (02) 9215 9336.

FAQs
Grants
Which category should I apply to?
As a general rule, artists should apply to New Work for the research, development and creation of work; Skills and Arts Development to exhibit or perform work, produce a catalogue, or undertake a mentorship or residency. For further information on the grant categories, see the Visual Arts Board’s ‘Grant Seeker’s Guide’: http://www.australiacouncil.gov.au/gran ... ding_guide, or call Romany Petersen (02) 9215 9336 to discuss which category is most appropriate.

How many times can I apply?

In 2008, individual applicants can only apply once to the Visual Arts Board’s New Work, Skills and Arts Development or Fellowship categories.

How can I represent my immersive or interactive work on a DVD?

Artists should submit DVD footage of a participant driving or interacting with the work, accompanied by 250 words of explanatory notes. The notes might include installation diagrams and should give the Board an idea of how the work might be experienced.

Residencies
If I am a successful recipient of a studio residency, when can I take up the residency and how long will it be for?

Studios are booked far in advance and there are limited options regarding the timing of Residencies.  Applicants who are successful in 2008 will undertake their studio residencies in 2009 to 2010.

General
If I receive an invitation to be part of a major international exhibition overseas, are there any avenues I can pursue to cover travel, transport and installation costs?
Yes, in exceptional cases the Board will consider Out-of-Time applications submitted outside the regular Skills and Arts Development grant round. After you have discussed your project with VAB staff you may write to the VAB Program Manager to request permission to apply.

Letters of request for Out-of-Time consideration must be addressed to the Program Manager, Visual Arts Board. You must meet all the criteria outlined in the booklet ‘Australia Council for the Arts: Grant Seeker’s Guide 2008 - Visual Arts’.

ASA Comics/Graphic Novels Portfolio Members Opportunity!

Submissions are now open for the 2008 National Young Writers' Festival (NYWF). We are seeking proposals from writers of short fiction and critical non-fiction, poets, novelists, journalists, zinesters, bloggers, playwrights, curators, editors, word-loving performance and installation artists, independent publishers, critics, activists, media geeks, comics artists, theory-heads and more … to take part in the massive 2008 10th Anniversary festival.

The NYWF has been Australia's premier event for young and emerging writers and culture-makers for the last decade. In 2008 we are celebrating this achievement with a special 10th anniversary festival. The NYWF encompasses over 70 events including readings, panel discussions, performances, exhibitions, interventions and a wide range of special projects, and brings together nearly 200 guests from a huge variety of backgrounds. It is a hands-on festival aimed at writers themselves, with the majority of audiences aged between 18 and 35. As well as playing host to senior and more experienced artists, NYWF is also home to fresh-faced first-timers. If you are passionate about writing and have something to share with thousands of like-minded people from across Australia, we want to hear from you.

Expressions of interest are sought from writers and artists wishing to participate in the 2008 Festival program. We are also seeking proposals for events, performances, installations or workshops of any nature which are in keeping with the NYWF's style and culture. We will be accepting proposals until Saturday 31st March, 2008.

The 2008 NYWF is on from October 2 – October 6. For more information and to download an application form, go to www.youngwritersfestival.org If you have any questions, or want to discuss an idea in person, don't hesitate to get in touch with this year's festival directors: Amy Ingram: amy@nywf.org.au | 0413 006 046; Daniel Evans: daniel@nywf.org.au | 0407 594 487; Nicolas Low: nic@dislocated.org | 0424 832 231.
