What should you include in a portfolio

What should you include in a portfolio for a design based degree? The course in particular is called 'Visual Communication' and specialises in Graphic Design, Photography and Illustration.

If you can draw then put in your best drawings. Typography/layout can be learnt but drawing skills are invaluable across all areas ...

I've been told to submit only your best work and to make no excuses ie "don't look at this corner here" or " this isn't the best I can do". Don't make your folio too long: scrutinisers (I looked it up in the dictionary) want to get you in a couple of pages, over five and they'll give up so short and awesome is the way to go. Follow submission details to the letter otherwise you risk getting your submission thrown in the bin.
