Cosplay

Postby Daniel McKeown on Thu Dec 09, 2004 12:12 pm

What the hell is up with "cosplay"?!? I understand that some people like comics and some people like cartoons and some people are obsessed for whatever reason with the Japanese examples of these media, but the whole "let's play dress up" seems to be a little bit too much to be just fan appreciation. Did I hear someone say 'fetish'?[/i]

I can offer no insight, but cosplay frightens me like the obsessive furries frightened me back at Ozcon.

Fandom has some very odd elements, and some of those odd elements I can KINDA understand without ever having felt that strongly about something myself.......but cosplay just baffles me.

Can't it just be left as a sexual fetish? Dressing up is one thing, trying to get others turned on by it is another.

It's not a lifestyle, it's genetic.

Daniel, you should see Otaku no Video... the interviews in that are funny as!

Seriously though, it's not just the anime fans. I've seen really fat Spidermen out there, and Comics R Us sells Batman TV series style costumes all the time apparently.

Yeah, name your fandom.

One Con, David James was accosted by a klingon family, who spoke to him in klingon, laughed and wandered off.

Mother, Father, kids. In klingon. Their children were raised speaking klingon.

Children.

You're getting the really scary bit of this picture....

A family of Klingons, that is a bit scary. I guess as kids (some of us), would dress up as batman/superman/whatever. Heck, in the US, there is a special day for it - Halloween. I suppose it is kinda like a sports fandom. Instead of going along in team colours/jerseys, people do it with costumes.

Heck people who are good at it even do it on stages called plays, or TV or movies. Maybe it is just a strange social context where it is different so it is weird.

I sort of understand fancy dress parties and Halloween but Cosplay seems creepier somehow. I think it's the amateur theatrical thing, that's always creepy.

I'm totally down with cosplay. What's really wrong with it? Sure they usually seem dorky and walking in your favourite convenient store dressed as vash the stampede is OK weird.

Still a comic convention is an ideal venue for people to dress up in home made costumes.

If people find it exciting in sexual situations, then it's OK. It doesn't harm anyone. Fucking plush animals though. Now that's weird!
