Battlestar Galactica - ARE YOU EXCITED?

Battlestar Galactica - ARE YOU EXCITED?

Postby JasonBerekLewis on Tue Apr 05, 2005 10:56 am

Anyone here getting into this show? It's awesome and definitely the best sci-fi drama on TV since the demise of Farscape ...

I'm completely addicted to Battlestar Galactica ... Just a few weeks back, I had to go to Canberra for work, and had to stay overnight. I was working late, so I missed BG (but taped it back in Melbourne). The wait to watch the tape was TERRIBLE!

Anyway, I'm also a DVD nut, so I'll be getting the box set.

Anyone else excited?

I don't know about excited. I've only caught the one episode. LITMUS was pretty good and seems like the show is my kind of fare.

Hopefully Ch10 will have the balls to screen the rest of the season during this rather comfortable slot they have it jostling around in.

Soda, I wouldn't bet on it. CHannel 10 have already shifted the slot one hour back, and have screened the show late on a few occasions - once by 15 mins!

I'd like to think that those bumps in the day are by that damned X-FACTOR show. But, yeah, things are staring to look rather shaky as it nears the halfway mark on the series. At least it's gotten this far.

I must admit that maybe i built myself up too much for this because i've been a little disappointed really. Too much angst and not enough shit blowing up (and when it does there's a friggin' tribunal hearing?)! And what's with re-using the same battle sequence every time the Cylons attack? And everyone seems to have calmly forgotten about the objective - ie find Earth? And what's with the poor guy left behind - is there a point?
It's a pity because the effects are brilliant, the sets gritty and realistic, and the ships are fantastic! It seems like Glen Larsen is trying to make up for the cheesiness of the original series but has gone too far the other way. How bout a little non-robot romance (have you noticed that EVERY relationship, real or imagined, involves the Cylons?)? What about the odd comic relief? Hell, what have you done to Starbuck!!

Still it's better than Stargate, or worse still Lexx... and I'm hoping it will improve as it goes on. I'll keep watching it until they move it to the usual sci-fi timeslot (ie midnight and on, with all the dating service ads to remind you that if you're up watching tv this late, you obviously need a significant other!!!)

Oh well, i'll just have to wait for a Buck Rogers remake... cause you could NEVER make that serious! Or there's Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, could look good with todays special effects rather the hilarious 'giant octopus' attacks of the original! Valley of the Giants, The Time Tunnel, The Invaders... bring it all back!!! Well... except Knight Rider...

I dunno, Lexx was so bad it was good... Like, I couldn't wait to see which porno star had become the lead actress each series :)

BSG is OK, but yeah, I find it rather slow for the reasons Troy stated. I mean, I don't need a massive battle every episode, but I would like it to pick up the pace, and try to focus on one thing at a time, rather than the constant flash backs and skipping to those guys stranded on the cylon infested planet...

I've made a stance never to watch it. It seems to be everything Battlestar Galactica wasn't. I don't like movies/tv where they take an idea, but miss the point completely....

I used to have my usual love/hate relationship with the original Battlestar - a relationship which soured dreadfully when they got to Earth with those awful jetbikes and that dagget-thing...but there was a certain "camp" value to be had from the "disco death robots" and the sight of an increasingly Brando-esq (at least in terms of waistline) Lorne Greene in a blue velour tracksuit, and I admit I had a certain fondness for the show despite the bad scripts, lack of pace and dreadful haircuts. So the new series comes as a great surprise - gritty, tensely plotted with some intriguing ideas explored. I particularly love the way the writers are not afraid to run an entire episode without a fight scene, the redesign of the cylons (despite the cheesy CGI and their unfortunate resemblance to malevolent Alessi can-openers) works ok, and the cylons masquerading as humans adds an uncomfortable edge of paranoia to the series, an edge well exploited by some excellent writing obviously aiming at some of the domestic policy excesses in the US post 9/11. Not so sure on the religous connations - whilst I'm the first to bring the little lucifers & a bic to any auto de fe aimed at the overly religious, so far it's all been a little heavy-handed...we'll see as it's early days yet.

The casting is impeccable, with a real sense of truth to the relationships and characters portrayed, especially the grizzled warrior Adama (no velour thank Yog!), the mad Balthazar and the extremely attractive Boomer, and even the incidental characters feel like they have real bite to them. With a bit of luck this could end up being the new B5 - certainly the first season so far compares very favourably with any SF series first season, with maybe the exception of the excellent Farscape. Definitely a show to watch!

Sorry to derail my own thread, but I've been catching up on Season 3 of Farscape lately - it's great stuff! I definitely think that Battlestar is up there with Farscape. I just hope it doesn't meet the same tragic demise ...

It wasn't on because last week was the season final and it was bloody tops.
I don't like Sci Fi television usually. But Battlestar hit lots of buttons. Hopefully season 2 will be out soon.

In even better news. It's been replaced with the third Season of the Shield which is one of the top 3 shows on the picture tube.
