2007 LEDGER AWARD RECIPIENTS ANNOUNCED!

Postby Gary Chaloner on Mon Jan 14, 2008 5:35 pm

http://ledgerawards.org/recipients_07.html

In an effort to clear up last year's voting, I've finally uploaded the nominees and recipients for last year's awards. I'm very sorry for the delay.

Voting reverted back to a popularity vote (based on round two voting for Popular Categories and round one voting for Judging Panel categories), much like the first year's awards. Personally, seeing how the final recipients rolled out in each category, I think it was a fair result for the honourees and the goals of the awards in general.

This year's awards are going to be organised in a very different way. Moving even further away from the popular voting format... but with the return of several categories.

More soon, but for now... CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE NOMINEES AND WINNERS!

Well done indeed to all winners and those nominated!

Ours is a small industry here, but recognition by our peers for all the bloody work that goes into these things is a great reward. I've only been a part of this community for a while, but I'm glad to have met all you guys and thank you for all the inspiration, guidance and chuckles I have had in that short time.

Very generous of you Matt, given the circumstances.

My thanks for the thanks to all and congrats to the other winners.

And also to Gary for persevering with it. Here's to the revised process.

Congrats to everyone - and Gary it shouldn't become a chore to you, maybe make it a web based polling system so it doesn't take too much time?

Congratulations to all the winners. Solid winners all.

I think the Ledgers are a stirling idea and one that needs to be supported. Comic creators need all the boosting they can get and the best place for this to begin is by others who know the hard work it takes to get things out in Australia under the conditions and limitations of the marketplace here.

Gary, you are to be congratulated and applauded for your efforts. Well done.

For my two bits i think a jury of peers is the best way to recognise work. Around 5-7 people would work consisting of ‘elders’ and previous winners.

Perhaps we don’t have the volume of work produced here for an annual award but bi-annual (that’s every two years) would work well. It would give jurors time to read works. And time for word to spread about nominations, process etc.

Eg – 2009 Awards for works first published/distributed in the calendar years 2007-08.

How bout an open nomination process where all submitted entries are eligible to become finalists? Then the most popular (via web polling and/or questionnaires in outlets/conventions or a combination) four or five in each category could be debated and decided on by the jury.

There could also be a jury only nominated award if they think there are works outside of the nominations that have been overlooked by the public. As well as the Ledger of Honour of course.

Even though I haven’t met Gary, I would be interested in supporting the process through volunteering some of my time on the admin and organising side and also plugging it where I can (in Melbourne at the very least.)

Cheers

John

So John you're suggesting a Logies type approach? Most Popular and Outstanding? or something to that effect?

Not quite the Logies - tho getting a Ledger given to you by an c grade actor from an american sitcom could be fun i guess!

I'm suggesting the anyone nominates under a set number of categories. Categories to be decided by the Jury when they first meet. The full list of nominees is then reduced to 4-5 by popular vote of some description (in a managable, accountable and transparent way - i'm sure it could be done - but i acknowledge this is the part that needs the most legwork) and then the jury decides from these finalists.

There should also be the Ledger of Honour and also a jury prize for a work they can agree on that hasn't won an award but they would like to highlight it - or even something that hasn't been nominated at all. I think this would be best as a unanimous decision if possible.

I think something along these lines could work. It would be manageable, transparent, sustainable and i think it would give the right mix of popular and specialist attention to each winner.

More than happy to keep floating ideas tho.

Cheers
