I think it's a great idea to have these Ledger Awards.
It make you feel that someone does care what you do for Australia comic.
Fear what you can't understand and hate what you can't conquer, bitch!

It has been a long time since the last post, and I am probably asking a question that you all may already know.
but - are the Ledger Awards still running, or have they been ceased?

A committee has been formed to get them going again. The inaugural meeting of this committee was held at the last Supanova in Sydney. More news as things develop.

Good to hear, Gary.
If you need help or more people for the committee, or whatever, just count me in.

That's fantastic news Gary. Bravo bravo. I think have awards of our own is an important part of building Australian comics.

I can't remember if I've posted this elsewhere, but I'm judging the Aurealis Awards Graphic Novels section this year. So as a practice run for sending your stuff in to Gary for the Ledgers (as you will I am sure) I really encourage you to send stuff in to the Aurealis Awards http://www.aurealisawards.com/ .

Nice one, Gary.

Additionally, its return has injected some much needed positivity into this forum.

Okay, here comes some negativity.

While I think it's probably a good thing if the Ledgers get going again, it's no secret that I have a lot of issues with them, the latest one being that winning past Awards hasn't been enough to secure a place for artists in the Wikipedia (some I've added have been deleted almost purely on the lack of credibility of these awards, which is a pity).

They started off well, but the inconsistent categories of the Awards year-to-year, the eventual Jury system of granting awards, the growing focus on U.S. commercial (over Australian independent) comics in the categories, and the there and gone website all became major problems,in my opinion.

I'm pleased to see that the Australian Cartoonists' Association has created a category for Comic Book Artist in this year's Stanley Awards (long ago they had a similar category), though not enough people seem to want to spend money to join this professional organisation.

It'd be good if we had something that represented all of the Australian comics scene - with a local focus - consistently year-to-year.

The Ledger Awards are a good idea, but most bad ideas begin that way...

It would be nice if one of the two con organisers (Supanova or Armageddon or possibly even the new ACAF) would get behind this. That approach works in the States where the Eisners are hosted by SDCC and the Harveys hosted by Baltimore comic con. It's in their best interest to then see they survive as it lends legitimacy to their heritage to have a long running awards associated with them.

Possibly way to early for ACAF to jump in to support this, but I would certainly be happy to.
The Ledgers would be an absolutely fantastic addition to the event and could be done in a similar way to how the Eisners, Harveys, etc are presented at other conventions, as Tom suggested.

But, the attendees of the awards would then need to travel to Brisvegas for the ceremony.
(Not a downside in my book). Plenty of room to have the event at the state library, too.
I am sure they would love to put some support into it as well.
