Gary Cottons Tale ??? Progressive Comic

MakePeace Media LTD is a Not-For-Profit Publishing Company that raises money for Charities operating or based in Australia through a number of innovative projects.

Gary Cottons Tale is a progressive comic featuring the character of Gary the Graveyard Hare?? the idea is that prominent Australian comic writers and illustrators will take turns adding to the adventures of Gary (following the rules below) to create a comic that will be distributed and sold with proceeds benefiting a charity/ies within Australia. Writers can submit something for an illustrator to draw or if you are both then just submit finished story.

Page limit 1-6 pages

Technical details: The comic book will be A5 black and white interior, 300 DPI


The Rules of Engagement

The character Gary the Graveyard Hare is a hare that lives on the edge of a cemetery (see the opening page next post) for a story to be considered

1. Gary the Graveyard Hare needs to be an actor, narrator or witness in/to the story

2. The story must end with Gary back in the cemetery

3. It is encouraged that the story continues on from the last, but where a writer feels they can expand Gary???s horizon they are free to take the Headstone option.

Headstone Option
Headstone option is where a writer can create a story away from the cemetery (while still adhering to rules 1 & 2) and prefaces/introduces this story by a headstone that telegraphs where the story is headed.

E.g. Headstone reads ???Here lies max beloved space monkey??? thus allowing a sci-fi space monkey story, etc.

These rules allow for maximum freedom for writers and illustrators while keeping a central character that binds it all together.

Genres
All genres are accepted comedy, horror, sci-fi etc.

Offensive material etc.
This comic is for the general population so try and aim for a PG or M in terms of content. The co-ordinators of this project will have ultimate veto rights to material submitted and no correspondence shall be entered into.

What Do I Get for Submitting?
Apart from the warm glow you get from helping others you will receive a free (that???s right Free!) copy of the final comic??

A Gary Cotton Tale Episode by Kelonearth
[Start with Gary wandering by some gravestones that might launch future stories and heading down to an unmarked pile of dirt with a little fluff of hare tail sticking out of it].

[Gary stands over the grave wistful] Before she died I used to have lots of philosophical discussions with my Mum... we all did me and my brothers, Richie, Roddy, Rudy, Bobby, Billy, Itchy, Scratchy, Special Ed, Thumper and Phil [could have a line of graves stretching beyond sight behind his Mum's].

We used to talk about the way the night sky was reflective of our own journey through life. [Draw panels as per his description over a few panels through this next section e.g. stars with little hares watching] You start out as a little star barely visible in the diminishing light of the day, just like being a little baby that is born into the glare of your parents already huge personality, but as you grow they disappear into the background and all the little stars around you come out to shine all together. Standing out amongst this crowd of stars is nigh on impossible, you soon see that you are part of one big body of bodies that go through their lives then disappear to let the next generation come out to shine. Then she'd say "Sons, any one of those stars has whole worlds dependent upon it shining, continuing to shine, even when we can't see that star it is keeping billions of lives together." Then she'd point at some stars starting to shine brightly. "There are Bazillions of little hares growing all over the little balls hanging off those suns." I didn't realise at the time this was her way of having "the chat". I guess she had to keep herself entertained with new and imaginitive ways of doing it, after all she had had to do it for so many of my brothers and sisters since Dad died, us being hares and all, we do tend to have lots of kids.

Oh, and if you're wondering, none of our new Stepdads seemed that interested in giving us the talk either, too busy rooting around - that's hareish for digging new warrens [Draw panels of males digging under the night sky and chasing frightened young females around the fields, maybe one serenading a doe-eyed female in the background and two others going hard at it in a hole under the ground].

Anyway, at the time I thought well if there's that many hares in the universe then maybe I can pull a root one day myself - that means set up house and invite in a little lady of my own. We'd all smile and stare at the star we imagined was ourself and then imagine all the little beings that would be looking up at us from their planets and thanking us as they went about their lives. It was times like those I really felt big things were in store for me. As the sun would start to come up again we'd feel wistful and start to think about how short life is. As she tucked me in to bed [have panel of getting tucked into bed by smiling Mum while one of the stepdads is busy rogering her from behind], I'd promise to make my mark in the world.

[Return to graveside shot. Gary can place a sprig of grass or a flower on her grave]

[He says to the camera as he walks away from the grave and an old decrepit looking male behind him is trying to roger the grave around the haretail] Maybe one day I will....

[maybe finish with a panel with a sly wink from Gary as he returns to his burrow with or greeted by an amorous looking female] I'll see you next time...

Looks like the gauntlet has well and truly been thrown?? So who???s next?

Now my problem is with this challenge... Is that I can't draw rabbit. But I'll try none the less.
