2005 Winners Anthology Cover

Postby Li'l Sketchy on Mon Feb 13, 2006 9:39 pm

Howdy goats! I mean, folks!

As the person charged with creating a cover for this fine collection of work, hopefully the first in a LONG line of fine collections, I have had a few ideas... Thought it best to share them to see what you think.

There has been no title, and I was thinking maybe the cover could be a challenge in itself for now, and for all future winners each year. And that is to come up with an image that would accompany a word balloon that reads:

'You want me to do WHAT?!?'

Hence, that gives us a title, and it also relates to what's inside. And in years to come, the winners of cover duty get to partake in this little challenge. I know it's sorta long, but it does roll off the tongue quite nicely.

My initial idea which I only have very rough sketches of thus far, is a guy is being pushed out along a diving board over a tank of sharks with a link of sausages hanging out of the front of his pants with the, as stated earlier, world balloon: 'You want me to do WHAT?!?' This is just one idea and I have plenty more... but the idea is that it HAS to accompany that word balloon.

I don't know... Let me know what you guys think. :D

I'll try and post some images soon.

I love it when a plan comes together. I'm all for your proposal Lil' Sketchy. Looking forward to seeing sausage man and the pit of crocodiles.

First rough

Postby Li'l Sketchy on Thu Feb 16, 2006 6:52 pm

Heya buddies and budettes.

Keep in mind I am partially colour blind, like most of the male population, and rarely use photoshop... but here's what I was thinking. This is just a rough. It could be better, but what do y'all think?

:D

I think he should be closer to the edge of the diving board

Since the speech bubble is the title, I think it should fill up the whole space to the left.

What Chris said, but I think it also needs a more "title" kinda of font instead of a "speech" font, and also colour the font in with a nice gradient and a good outer stroke.

I reckon something like Blambot's BadaBoom or Sergeant SixPack...
That being said, if you want to stick with the "speech" fonts, maybe Letter-O-Matic...

But the pic itself is WAY cool, and I like the whole concept.
I've already got an idea for another one, but it probably means the book would have to be sold in Brown Paper Bags... heheh :D

I know sausages are funny but something a little bloodier might work better. Like a leg of lamb or headless chook. At least the sausages need to be bigger.

The end of the board kind of looks like it is outside the pool and actually safe.

Heh. Thanks guys. Yeah, there's tons wrong with it, I know. But it's a start!

As for the title, I believe that this actually WON'T be the title after all. I mean, it's still the cover idea, but it IS going to have an actual title above that. It's still all a work in progress, but I'll keep posting pics as I do them anyway 'cos it's fun.

Li'l Sketchy,

What about a homage to the old Horror EC titles, with the challenge being the picture for the front cover (see my rough sample below). That way, the comic has a title "Challengers of the Month", we can put a picture from a few of the entries in the side bar on the cover (I was thinking the penguin cowboy pointing the gun, your pornstar showing her assets and maybe the monkey with the hat). Each year, the challenge will be to draw the insert image for the cover with the phrase "You want me to do what?!?" What does everyone think? If anyone likes the idea, I'm more than happy to whip up a basis template for the cover...

Thanks Jacen, 'Challengers of the Month!' Love it. Why I can hear the theme song now. And I suggested that box idea with art from the other entries in them to Mr. Makepeace and he liked it too. Although I wouldn't put one of my images in there, as I got the cover duty.

What do you think of the title Mr Makepeace? You're the driver of this bus. ;)

Hmm... or... the thread is called 'Monthly Challenges'....

We could just add an 'r' and make it 'Monthly Challengers'.
