(Please note: Another pay to enter competition and a vague promise of publication so please read fine print... however, Category number 5 is 3 pages of a graphic novel. )

The fourth ‘CYA Later, Alligator’ Children’s and Young Adult (CYA) writers & illustrators Conference will be held on 12th September 2009 in partnership with Brisbane Writers Festival.
This conference is aimed as professional development for new and established writers and illustrators of Children’s and Young Adult literature. Master classes will be conducted by international and national authors, illustrators and industry professionals.

Children’s & Young Adult Writing and Illustrating Contest 2009

Prize for each section:
$100.00 per category, submission of short listed entries to at least one children’s publisher.
Feedback, in the form of judges marking sheets, will be emailed to ALL Entrants by 31st October 2009.

Deadline: Opens on 1st February 2009 – last mail postmarked by Tuesday 30th June 2009.

Publication: The winning entry and short-listed finalist will be considered by a publisher of
children’s books, with no guarantee of publication. Author/Illustrator retains copyright.

Eligibility:
1. All writers/illustrators (Australian & New Zealand residents) who have not been published in book format within the CYA genres.
2. This contest is also open to current published writers/illustrator who are either:
a) Published with one book in print within the CYA genres ONLY;
OR
b) Published in e-book format with one book within the CYA genres ONLY; OR
c) Self-published with one book within the CYA genres ONLY.
d) Published with books in print and e-book format in other genres.

Categories:
1.Picture Book – Text only for preschool aged children up to 500 words in English, must be original work not previously published in any format, nor accepted elsewhere for publication or broadcast. Open theme.

2.Picture Book - Text only for primary aged children up to 500 words in English, must be original work and not previously published in any format, nor accepted elsewhere for publication or broadcast. Open theme.

3.Chapter Book - Text only for older primary aged children. First 1000 words in English, must be original work and not previously published in any format, nor accepted elsewhere for publication or broadcast. Open theme.

4.Fiction writing for Young Adults. First 1000 words in English, must be original and not previously published in any format, nor accepted elsewhere for publication or broadcast. Open theme.

5.Graphic Novel or Illustrated Picture Book (words & illustrations): Fiction or non fiction – any age group within CYA. 3 pages of graphic novel or 3 pages of illustrated picture book, up to 500 words. Words in English must be original and not previously published in any format, nor accepted elsewhere for publication or broadcast. Open theme. Coloured photocopies of work and computer prints accepted, but must be illustrator’s original work not previously published in any format, nor accepted elsewhere for publication or exhibition. No original art work to be sent in, e.g. oil paintings, collages etc.

6.Illustration:
Option 1: Illustrate up to three pages of one of the two extracts, written by Anita Bell or Paul Collins.
Option 2: Design a cover for either of the extracts written by Anita Bell or Paul Collins.
Picture Book concept aimed at Primary School children. Coloured photocopies of work and computer prints accepted, but must be illustrator’s original work not previously published in any format, nor accepted elsewhere for publication or exhibition. No original art work to be sent in, e.g. oil paintings, collages etc. Extract is not mandatory to appear on the page, but Option One (1 – 3 pictures) or Option Two (Cover option) must be clearly marked on the entry form.

16’s to 18’s are welcome to enter, but they must have a parent or guardians signature of permission on the entry form. They will be judged as adults.

Entry Fee: $16.50 ($1.50 GST included) for each entry.
$17.50 if paid through paypal to cover processing fee.
