Spammerrrsss

Postby Pirotess on Fri May 22, 2009 3:37 pm

Hey mods, you may want to ban "SAMSUNG" and delete their posts - I killed off one in the podcast forum but that's all I have access to!

Yay spambots.

It's interesting to note the view count of the spam.

Three messages about iPhones and only two views between them.

One message about Viagra and it's got 4 views.

What does that tell you about the forum users? :p
I shouldn't be here.

My assumption is that whoever's behind the spamming is using xRumer software.

It's amazingly good at what it does, which is create accounts and post to phpBB, IPB and vBulletin boards.
It even cracks a decent amount of CAPTCHA codes and creates temporary email addresses for each account in case there's email based activation for the forum.
For those that wish to check it out: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Xrumer ... There's a link to the site you can purchase it from in there if you feel like doing some less than ethical promotions of whatever. Oh, and don't ask why I know about this shit.

Anyway, Maggie, one thing xRumer still gets fucked over by is honeypot traps.
Basically, create a field in the signup that a real human would not, or could not, fill out.
The bots will still see the field, fill it out, and then you know they're not a real person and can ban the accounts. There are ways of doing this automatically.
I recommend you hop on over to OzTAKU and hit up David Li / Cyraxis, because he's the dude that installed ours, and all the spamming that happens on our forums now is done manually by real people... Mostly me about the cheap Wacom tablets at those daily deal websites.

EDIT: Found a video of it in action: http://pandalabs.pandasecurity.com/blog ... xrumer.swf
Scary, no?

Thanks, Avi. There actually is a field in the signup for this. We've just been a little behind in cleaning out the unactivated and/or obvious ones (if anyone's interested, they _always_ put "test" in the extra field). Thanks for the info, I hadn't seen Xrumer before.

This is really interesting.

On the other hand, I'm tempted to start a forum just to let spammers sign up.
