Comic Jam Proposal

Postby Phreak on Sun Sep 17, 2006 7:16 pm

Consider yourself infiltrated!! Hehe!

First off, i love the site, and forum. It kicks arse. I really dig your 'monthly sequential challenge' too, will probably join in from October!

Anyway. I've from that 'other rugby and cricket playing country' called South Africa.
Here, the local artists are, for the first time standing up to be counted. Our local industry is basically non existant, and 99.95% of comic sales here are sales from American/Japanese, and some European stuff. I started Comicworx with a friend to try and give local artists exposure, as well as get more people involved in reading and buying comics. AND ITS WORKING!

We recently had a ComicJam, with 24 random artists from accross the country, some work was international level, some was crap (well, it was), but the point is we're starting to create an awareness which was not there before.

Here's the Comicjam page link:

Just click on the thumbnails to enlarge the images.

Here's the winning covers:

Anyway. This topic is to propose a possible inter-continental comicjam contest between South African guys, and Aussie! Say 12 artists from each country working off the same script? I think it would totally rock, and help build a support group.

What do you think??
I'm thinking (the way we did the first one) is you have one script, but 'localise' it. What we did with the first comp (the 8pages) the Capetown artists made it play off in Capetown (you'll see table mountain etc in the background) where the Gauteng team had it play off in Pretoria (the capital).

So in the same way, we can have a story playing off in johannesburg/sydney/melbourne/pretoria with your own characters designs and place references. So each 'team' will have a local feel to it.

Our site's been up and running for like...5months, and our forum (http://comicwrx.5.forumer.com) already had 110members in such a short time. I think it would be cool to have 'your team' work up here, and out team work on our site, and reference each other, build a community etc.

:p It'll rock :p

I sure hope so! You are welcome to sign up right here (if nobody objects to that?) Pending the response we can start getting it off the ground! With the previous one we marketed it quite extensively, with coverage in magazines, newspapers, and on the net. We even made an appearence on TV with it! So hopefully we can get someone over there in the driverseat who would co-ordinate it, and create a hype around it. (hint hint)

Well, at least three people's read it, and think it's a cool idea!
Uhm, makepeace, do you guys have a 'mail members' tool u utilise to email all your board members? We have a limit of 1such mail a week, and I would really appreciate it if you could create an awareness of this in such an email, next time u use it?

It might be a bad timing thing to. Supanova is in October so there are probably a lot of people just working on finishing off projects for the convention and organising a bazillion things. If you don't get much interest now it might be worthwhile bumping it after the con.

I have to agree with azahru most people here are in top gear trying to keep deadlines for Supanova – I like your enthusiasm, it’s just a timing issue…

Sounds like a great idea - though as the others have mentioned timing might be an issue.

Of course - you'll have to hit up the New Zealanders for a true Tri-Nations!

Yep Yep, I thought it would be a good idea to start creating awareness now, but since we finished with ours like 2months ago, and with our Outline stuff 2weeks ago, I think realistically I'm thinking of starting it off around JANUARY only,

Then the writers can co-ordinate something, and by February the artists can start their work, with the deadline around April. Soooo it's pretty much a start of 2007 thing! Our first 'convention' is in the start of April, and that could be a cool time to show off some work on this side.

Has Supernova come and Gone??

First off, the best way I reckon this will work is if have two or more writers working together on like a 24 page script, say, due End of January! Then we take January/February to round up the artists from each country, with the deadline for the pages April 1st! Then all the pages will be online on Both PulpFaction Forum, and Comicworx!??

Hope people are still keen, I think it's a great idea for some hype!
