Can you get the printers to do it as part of their service? ( If you dont have an ISSN number ) just a simple barcode for price only?

( whoops! I keep double clicking submit. )

not unless they are an exceptional printer.

the ISBN also identifies the *publisher* of the works.

generally, if you are only likely to publish a few titles (up to 10) then in australia it will cost $11.35 for each ISBN, which adds just over 2c to the cover price on a print run of 500...

yeah - f i was a retailer and someone handed me a book with the barcode "0000000001', i wouldn't be well inclined to treat it as a professional product.

also, iirc, there is a database of "current" works, with their ISBNs... i think retail DBs might even use that as a source... any industry insiders got info on that...?

i have no idea where the barcode numbers come from, other than from the magical barcode number generator dude that emails them to me.

I generate barcodes for work and use Symart pro 4.0.4. it generates and can save in eps, .ai etc.
each number means soemthing , and
all products from australia start with 93
books are numbered internationally with 977 ISSN or 978 for an ISBN

I think you shouldnt change the size once it's generated (though you can change the size of the bars, over all height and size etc when generating it)

it also wont generate a fake code, the last number is automaticaly added when you put it in, and if it doesn't match the number you've got, theres something wrong with it

more than you ever needed to know on barcodes here
