Tokyopop contract

Postby rumpusroomie on Tue Jun 03, 2008 11:22 pm

Has anyone been reading all the stuff about the horrible Tokyopop contract recently? It's really shocking business practices and a good reminder to check your rights especially with Caanan's recent winning of Zuda.

Haven't heard a thing (I don't move in Manga circles). What happened - esp. to Caanan?

Not to Caanan, i've not seen Caanan's Zuda contract but with so many of us entering these competitions (Caanan with Zuda, Troy and BMB with the beer thing, Grug with Top Shelf) i thought shining a light on the contracts would be an interesting experience.

It's more a lesson in the whole compete for contract trend that's sweeping the webcomics industry at the very least. Often they require you to sign over any creator rights away. Tokyopop's is a really bad example. You relinquish rights, MORAL rights and even after the contract expires they still retain some of your rights in perpetutity..

For more on this check out Bryan Lee O'Malley's blog.

As a Solicitor I have to agree- you should always read what your signing in detail and if you have questions, ask someone (I'm happy to help out with any questions regarding Queensland law in my free time). Us Solicitors, we tend to hide lots of information in the small print and it can come back and bite you in the arse*. You don't want to create the next "Superman" and then be battling in Court well after your in the ground for the creators rights to the character!

*By reading this sentence you agree to Monstar biting you on the arse...sucker!
