Free Comic Book Day Anthology

Postby Baden on Mon Nov 01, 2010 9:59 am

Hey all,

When I popped in to the Melbourne Creators' meet up a couple of months ago, Bobby N and a few others were talking about putting together a compilation book of the work of the local creators - maybe a page each with a referral to a website. The idea was to provide a sampler to hand out at every table at conventions so the punters could get a taste of everyone's work from any of the exhibitors (I think).

I was thinking about sponsoring something similar for the next Free Comic Book Day - May 7 2011. Send it free to the local comic stores and see if we can drum up some interest in the locals.

To set the standard it would be a floppy so 260*170mm and depending on interest probably one page each.

Anyone interested?

According to the US web site its May 11 2011.

Besides the above interest I have had some good offline interest, so it looks like a goer.

At this stage I would probably be looking to get the submissions about 6 weeks prior to the big day.

Can I just ask, when you say local creators, is this one a Melbourne only project?

It'd be great if every state had something like this going, as well as building awareness at cons, you could order a copy from each state every year and be brought up to knowledge with the styles and names happening everywhere. Great educational resource! Something like Melbourne Scene 2011 or Perth Scene 2010 (except not such a lame name), they could almost become a trading item! One page, one name, one image, one weblink. Average punter can pick it up, browse through, realise which artist's style resonates with them and seek them out. Awesome.

I know a lot of galleries stop, collaborate and listen, to make 6 month guides showing off who they have coming in and examples of work that are shared amongst all the venues in a particular area.

I don't want to get too parochial. The plan was to have it open to anyone with more work to promote. Probably no point taking a page if that's the only thing you have, but when i said local i meant Australian. I would be printing enough to send them to any Aus comic stores interested in supporting it.

Sweet, I thought so, I just got confused with Melbourne meet up info. Sounds like a great resource.
