This is why we NEED Doujicon:

Postby Paul Bedford on Sun Oct 25, 2009 6:20 am

This great litle article (from the CBR column on the front page) highlights to me exactly why Melbourne, indeed every state that runs the bigger, flashier, shallower Cons, needs an indie creator focused Con:

“... I think we exhibitors all ask the same desperate question, ‘Does anybody else like this stuff, too? I made it, but do you like it?’" Kazmierczak said. “At Comic Con, the numbers speak for themselves, and the mob is like one voice. At APE, it's a genuine conversation between creator and consumer. No middle man."

Yes indeed... this is why creator-focussed cons (like Melbourne's Doujicon) are so ADORED by those at the grass-roots level of comics. One doesn't feel like they're behind loud giants, having to scream for attention. People are actively there for the type of work you're selling.

Hi Guys

How's it going?

Hope the weekend went well for you both.

Paul, that was a great little article you pointed out. Can't help but agree with you and Bobby.
I'm quite looking forward to the next Doujicon.

However, I had a distinct feeling of bad deja-vu when I began to read this thread, and was reminded of a similar thread (Armageddon 2007- Now In Melbourne) from a couple of years ago, when an attempt at some genuine, non-aggressive discourse on almost the same topic was hijacked by someone called Vent (plus a couple of others) making deliberately provocative attacks on the thread and derailing it.

Hopefully, a couple of years on, cooler, more relaxed, heads will prevail.

Cheers

Doujicon has been my favourite Melbourne con since year one, and it will, I think, always remain my favourite. That friendly, creator-focused atmosphere is something that can't easily be matched.

I know i should know this but is there a Doujicon or equivalent in Sydney. Or has it been tried before?

I am aware of a Con called 'Smash', but I know little of it. Others more learned will guide you, my son. :p

SMASH is for fanartists, and more specifically anime fanartists, so I personally wouldn't bother. Hayden can testify to that.

I just learned of something that might be applicable called finders keeper (or similar) in brisbane, which the article said originated in Sydney? Seemed more like a crafts event rather than a specific comics event but it welcomed artists and illustrators.

The years that I went as an exhibitor... I can't argue with Alisha on that.

As for this year though, the Rocksalt TPB looked like it was going through a few copies so the "fan-art" orientation isn't entirely true...
