The best comic ever!

Postby Tom on Sat Feb 28, 2009 2:40 pm

Inspired by another post of mine asking 'is watchmen the best' I was wondering if there had ever been a thread dedicated to the best comic ever. After absolutely no looking through old threads I'm posting up this thread to ask...

What is the BEST COMIC EVER?

Why?

Myself, I don't know. I love Hellboy for the art and mythology but they're not great stories. Maus is great but the art doesn't make me go all wobbly. Sincity looks great but is dumb. The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen is lots of fun but not quite there.
I'm going to have to go with a French comic called The Quest for the Bird of Time. Written by Serge Le Tendre and illustrated by Regis Loisel. The art is awesome (but sadly Loisel got a bit full of himself afterwards and has only produced rubbish. he's good but...) and the story is about much more than going on a quest and bashing brains.

Your thoughts?

Hands down, 'Punx in Space'. Early nineties Aussie Indie comic. Never read it though, but I heard it's really good, and with a title like that, how could I lose?

I always loved Grant Morrison's and Philip Bond's, 'Kill your Boyfriend' from 1995.

I dearly love the Street Angel series from slave labour graphics, by jim rugg (art/writing) and brian maruca (writer)

http://www.streetangelcomics.com/

and cut and paste from wikipedia:

A Street Angel live-action short film was produced in 2008, starring Kate Bell as Jesse. It is written and directed by Lucas Testro and produced by Adam Bishop, adapting Issue 1 of the comic series. The film also incorporates elements from Issue 4 of the series. Street Angel co-creator Jim Rugg contributed original artwork that is used in the film's opening animated sequence.

Actually made here in Australia!

Akira!

To me, the perfect example of sequential story telling.
And the scope is just unbelievable.
Domu is brilliant also, along the same lines.
Otomo is light years ahead of the rest, wish he was still doing comics.

Also a big fan of Lone wolf and cub, epic!

What a tough question.

I could reel off the my ten favourites for tonight, but I don't want to argue that any one of them is the best comic ever. I haven't read every comic, for a start. And secondly the ones I enjoy the best aren't always the ones that are the most influential or the best executed or whatever.

My ten favourites today:

PREACHER, VAGABOND, JIMMY CORRIGAN, I KILLED ADOLPH HITLER, PROMETHEA, UZUMAKI, LONE WOLF & CUB, FROM HELL, MAUS, GRIMJACK.

But, fuck, what about CHOPPER: SONG OF THE SURFER, AKIRA, HITMAN, WATCHMEN, HOW TO BE AN ARTIST...

It's too hard. I give up.

This is actually the easiest question to answer, ever. The obvious winner, hands down, is TOMB OF DRACULA.

Tomb of Dracula is this singular vision of a comic, realised wonderfully by Marv Wolfman and Gene Colan. It's basically the best vampire story I've ever read or seen -- and it balances having the villain as a main character incredibly well.

This comic is a HOW TO guide to writing, handling character development, large casts, villains, heroes, death, self-contained stories, multi-issue-arcs, vingnettes, epics, crossovers, horror, violence... anything you can think of there's stuff in there to tell you how to goddamn write that stuff.

It's the best work Marv Wolfman has ever done and a book matched absolutely perfectly to Gene Colan's talents. Tomb of Dracula is just gorgeous to look at. There's no other comic out there that is this beautiful. Just pouring through the art is a delight.

Is it All-Star Superman? Because it's fantastic and you'd be right for choosing it.

If I absolutely HAVE to pick one favorite... then it has to be:

CAGES: Dave McKean.
(It floored me five years ago. Still does.)

Following that, its:

RIPPLE: A PREDILICTION FOR TINA: Dave Cooper,
DEAR JULIA: Brian Biggs,
CEREBUS: Dave Sim/Gerhard,
HEY WAIT!: Jason,
IT'S A GOOD LIFE IF YOU DON'T WEAKEN: Seth
SIGNAL TO NOISE: Neil Gaiman/Dave McKean,

.
